Communty Planning • Civic Engagement •Sustainable Design

We believe that the most successful community building projects institute an effective public involvement strategy finding ways to collaborate with stakeholders and the community at-large by using traditional and non-conventional methods, while engaging a multi-disciplinary team of specialists in a hands-on way to address specific concerns, and use the language of design to achieve a shared vision and ultimately arrive at a buildable community-based plan.

We collaborate with project partners to craft a complete Civic Engagement Plan incorporating the most effective civic engagement strategies and beginning with an understanding of stakeholders needs. Effective public involvement leads to a project’s success.

We organize a broad-based and multi-disciplinary team that pulls from a array of specialists necessary for the specific scope of work to work in an on-site Design Studio for an intense multi-day work period offering the most effective way to arrive at a buildable, community-based plan.

The tools of Low Impact Development and Light Imprint New Urbanism allow for seamless integration of stormwater management and green infrastructure into placemaking.

The following set of principles serve as a framework integrating sustainable water-oriented practices into  urban design decisions and a sustainable community-based development plan:

1. Rainwater is a valuable community resource.
2. Water management infrastructure is an integral element of neighborhood design.
3. The foundation of a stormwater master plan starts at the building lot.
4. Engineering elements can add to the character- or place making elements of the neighborhood.
5. Streets play integral role in generating runoff and can help filter it into the ground.
6. End-of-pipe elements can be designed as carefully as the architecture or urban design of the place.
7. Preserved areas and other open spaces can be supported by permanent management measures that provide long-term support for the ecosystems.

Following these principles and taking context into account will establish that the palette of options and solutions be more creative and contextually appropriate adding to the long-term value of the place. All landscape, planning, urban design and specific architectural elements arising from the site's context will enhance all components of a plan creating enduring public spaces and valued civic realm.
